One of DEWALT’s biggest strengths is that it has continued building around the same cordless platform rather than introducing completely new battery systems every few years.
For most users, everything starts with 20V MAX.
As cordless technology has evolved, DEWALT has introduced several battery technologies and specialty platforms designed for different applications. Instead of replacing the 20V MAX platform, these newer batteries give users more choice depending on whether they value compact size, maximum performance, longer runtime, or the ability to power heavy-duty equipment.
Today’s DEWALT cordless lineup can be divided into six main battery families.

The important thing to remember is that POWERSTACK and XR POWERPACK are not separate cordless platforms. They are different battery technologies within the 20V MAX system. FLEXVOLT also works with many 20V MAX tools while adding compatibility with DEWALT’s 60V MAX FLEXVOLT equipment.
POWERSHIFT is the exception. It is a dedicated battery platform designed specifically for heavy-duty construction equipment.

If you’re just getting started with DEWALT, build your collection around the 20V MAX platform. It gives you access to hundreds of compatible tools and allows you to add POWERSTACK, XR POWERPACK, or FLEXVOLT batteries later as your needs change.
For most contractors, tradespeople, farmers, mechanics, landscapers, and serious homeowners, 20V MAX is the heart of the DEWALT cordless system.
One battery platform powers hundreds of compatible tools, including drills, impact drivers, circular saws, reciprocating saws, grinders, nailers, inflators, vacuums, outdoor power equipment, lighting, and much more.
Instead of investing in several different cordless systems, you can continue building around one battery platform as your tool collection grows.
Another reason professionals continue choosing DEWALT is that the company has improved the platform without forcing customers to replace everything they already own. New battery technologies like POWERSTACK and XR POWERPACK continue to work with many existing 20V MAX tools, giving users the opportunity to upgrade battery performance without starting over.
A DEWALT 20V MAX battery contains five lithium-ion cells connected in series. Each cell reaches approximately four volts immediately after charging, giving the battery a maximum voltage of about 20 volts. As the battery is used, the operating voltage naturally settles closer to 18 volts.
That’s why you’ll sometimes see similar cordless platforms marketed as either 18V or 20V MAX. In real-world use, the number printed on the battery is far less important than the overall tool platform, battery technology, and tool design.

If you’re investing in DEWALT for the first time, we recommend choosing the 20V MAX platform unless you have a very specific reason to do otherwise. It offers the broadest tool selection, the greatest flexibility, and the easiest path for future expansion.
Standard DEWALT 20V MAX batteries continue to be the backbone of the cordless lineup. Built with traditional cylindrical lithium-ion cells, they deliver dependable performance across hundreds of compatible tools and remain the batteries many professionals reach for every day.
While DEWALT has introduced newer battery technologies in recent years, standard 20V MAX batteries still offer one of the best combinations of value, versatility, and proven reliability. They’re available in a variety of capacities, making it easy to choose a battery that matches both the tool and the job.
If you’re buying your first additional battery, a standard 5Ah 20V MAX battery remains one of our favourite recommendations. It provides excellent runtime without becoming overly heavy and works equally well on drills, impact drivers, circular saws, grinders, and many other everyday cordless tools.

If someone walked into Contractor Cave today and asked us which DEWALT battery to buy without giving us much other information, we’d usually start with a standard 5Ah 20V MAX battery.
It isn’t the lightest battery DEWALT makes, and it isn’t the most advanced. What it offers is something many contractors value even more: dependable performance, excellent versatility, and outstanding value. For many users, it’s still the battery that gets used most often.
