Burlington’s History

The beautiful City of Burlington is in the Halton Region at the west end of Lake Ontario, between Toronto and Niagara Falls. This area was home to the Mississauga Nation before the 19th century. The British purchased the land in 3 Upper Canada Treaties from 1792 to 1818. Around 1802 the Joseph Brant household settled in the area and Joseph Brant is often known as the founder of Burlington. By the 19th century, the name “Burlington” was commonly used. The fertile soil and moderate temperatures allowed early farmers to prosper. Produce and lumber competed for space on the busy docks. Increased wheat production from Western Canada in the latter half of the 19th century helped to convince local farmers to switch to fruit and vegetable production, earning the nickname “Garden of Canada”. In the early 1900s the railway was increasingly used for shipping, marking the end of commercial wharves. By 1974, Burlington was incorporated as a city with a population exceeding 100,000. You can explore more of Burlington’s vibrant past and present through Burlington Official Site or its detailed Wikipedia page .
